Contents of the Mew box

The Pokémon Company lists the Fusion Strike Elite Trainer Box contents as:

  • 8 Fusion Strike booster packs
  • 65 card sleeves featuring Mew
  • 45 Energy cards
  • A player’s guide
  • A Pokémon TCG rulebook
  • 6 damage-counter dice
  • 1 competition-legal coin-flip die
  • 2 acrylic condition markers
  • A collector’s box with 4 dividers
  • A code card for Pokémon TCG Online

There is no promo card in this box, so the packs and accessories are the full story. Because Pokémon TCG Online is no longer running, the code card is best treated as a piece of the original packaging.

Fusion Strike in brief

Fusion Strike carries the set code SWSH08 and reached shelves on 12 November 2021. It contains 284 cards: 264 in the main set plus 20 secret rares. For years it was the largest English set, which is why so many collectors still treat it as a project.

It also brought in a third battle style, Fusion Strike, to sit beside Single Strike and Rapid Strike, handing deck builders a whole new family of cards to explore.

Alternate arts and headline Pokémon

At the top of the set are Mew V, Mew VMAX and Genesect V. The Galar starters reach their final forms here as well, with Gigantamax VMAX cards for Rillaboom, Cinderace and Inteleon.

Three alternate arts sit at the top of most wish lists:

  • Mew VMAX Alternate Art, 269/264
  • Espeon VMAX Alternate Art, 270/264
  • Gengar VMAX Alternate Art, 271/264

Each carries a number higher than 264, the size of the main set, so glance at the corner number on every card you pull. Anything over 264 is a secret rare worth a top loader.

The Mew box for players and collectors

Mew is on all 65 sleeves and Mew VMAX leads the set, which is why plenty of collectors simply refer to it as the Mew box. Sixty of them sleeve a complete deck, leaving five for standout cards.

Newcomers can turn their pulls into a first deck with the 45 Energy cards, use the dice, coin-flip die and condition markers during play, and learn the rules from the rulebook and player’s guide. Having all of that in one box is why many shoppers buy Fusion Strike ETB stock rather than single boosters.

Organising a 284-card set

The collector’s box has four dividers, so give Energy, Trainers, other Pokémon and your V and VMAX cards a section each. Protect alternate arts and secret rares in top loaders as soon as they appear. Later, when the collection moves into a binder, the box can hold your dice, markers and leftover sleeves.
