Shining Fates and the Shiny Vault

A special Sword & Shield expansion, Shining Fates arrived on 19 February 2021; in Japan the matching set is Shiny Star V. Its 195 cards break down into a 72-card main set, 1 secret rare and a Shiny Vault subset of 122 cards running from SV001 to SV122.

Most of the excitement sits in the Shiny Vault: over 100 Shiny Pokémon, Shiny Pokémon V and VMAX among them, each with an etched finish. These cards can take the place of the reverse holo slot in a pack.

The Charizard chase

Mention Shining Fates and most collectors think of one card: Shiny Gigantamax Charizard VMAX, numbered SV107/SV122. It is a big part of why people peel through each pack slowly, card by card.

Opening for Shiny Vault pulls

Because Shiny Vault cards can take the reverse holo slot, check that position carefully in every pack. Have a sleeve ready for each etched card as it appears, since the finish deserves protection from the moment it leaves the wrapper.

Eevee VMAX promo and matching sleeves

The box has one promo, a foil Eevee VMAX, which matches the 65 Gigantamax Eevee sleeves nicely. Sleeve it before opening any packs, and if it is headed for a binder, move it into a top loader.

Eevee collectors can use this card to open a binder section given over to Eevee and its Evolutions. Thanks to the matching sleeves, every deck built from your pulls carries the same theme.

Playing and sorting with the kit

Newer players get everything needed to start battling: two acrylic condition markers, a coin-flip die, six damage-counter dice and 45 Energy cards. How a game works is covered by the rulebook and player’s guide.

With four dividers, you can file Shiny Vault cards separately from the main set and always find your best pulls quickly. That tidy storage is another reason to buy Shining Fates ETB stock over loose packs.

Shining Fates or Paldean Fates?

For the Sword & Shield era, Shining Fates is the Shiny set. Scarlet & Violet got its own when Paldean Fates returned Shiny Pokémon in January 2024; that set’s Elite Trainer Box has a Shiny Mimikyu promo and nine packs.

The two sets feel quite different. Paldean Fates is built around Shiny Pokémon ex, whereas Shining Fates focuses on Shiny Pokémon V and VMAX, so owning both shows neatly how Shiny cards have changed. For Paldean Fates packs as well, take a look at the Paldean Fates Booster Bundle.
